COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
MASSACHUSETTS & RHODE ISLAND
Slingshot is searching for a community organizer to work alongside communities on the frontlines of climate and environmental injustice.
Built on 25 years of experience with environmental health organizing in the Northeast, Slingshot works alongside communities most impacted by environmental threats to take aim at polluters and build community power. We know that it is critically important that those who are at greatest risk of harm from environmental racism and classism are leaders in the environmental movement. We bring leaders together to build powerful statewide and regional networks, strengthening the environmental movement and laying the foundation for lasting change.
As a new and quickly evolving organization, we are excited to find candidates who will help us grow the movement and envision the future of our collective. We hold long-term relationships with community groups, partners, funders, and donors that we will deepen. We are excited to expand our reach through new connections in the region.
One of our team’s top priorities is delving into dismantling systems of oppression throughout our work, both within our organization and in partnership with communities.
What You'll Do:
The Community Organizer will take on campaign program work in a specific geographic area, depending on where you are based. Right now, we are primarily looking for coverage in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This position will be part of a horizontal organizational structure that operates through consensus decision-making. Major elements of the position include:
-
Grassroots community organizing & workshop facilitation: As an organizer, you will be responsible for leading group workshops on essential skills like campaign planning, messaging, and fundraising. You will also connect with community leaders for individual support, and work with community groups as they build relationships and organize their neighbors. We are holding most workshops and meetings through Zoom or over the phone, with some in person.
-
Campaign strategy and long-term support: You will invest in long-term relationships with community members in impacted communities, offering support to tackle environmental and health threats they may be facing and partnering on campaigns to move towards safer, healthier solutions. You will dig into decision-making processes to determine the most strategic courses of action and work closely with partner organizations in the movement.
-
Fundraising: Guided by the development director, you will build relationships with foundations and help write grant applications. You will identify and deepen connections with grassroots donors.
-
Organizational development: You will join in building out and launching our new organizational identity & vision, as well as participate in short- and long-term organizational planning.
-
Communications and media presence: Guided by the communications lead, you will help increase Slingshot’s organizational presence through in person and digital media tactics.
What You’ll Need:
-
At least one year of related work experience, such as community organizing or grassroots campaign coordination
-
Demonstrated experience organizing in multi-racial, multi-generational, and multi-class settings
-
Strategic thinking and effective facilitation skills
-
Passion for community organizing, movement building, and racial, economic and environmental justice
-
A driver’s license, with a car you are willing and able to drive for work preferred
-
Flexibility in adjusting to a growing organization
-
Eagerness to participate in non-hierarchical organizational structure
-
Commitment to dismantling systems of oppression
We are especially looking to hire candidates from our geographic area (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine) and from the frontline constituencies with whom we work. People of color, indigenous people, immigrants, LGBTQ+, gender non-conforming folks and women are strongly encouraged to apply.
